Galatone

An storied town with a 14th century castle, palaces, and ancient churches

Located in the Salento, the “heel of the boot” in Italy, Galatone is  at the crossroads between the neighboring towns of Galatina, Gallipoli and Nardo. It is the largest town where the Greek dialect Griko is spoken. It is 5 miles from the Ionian sea and the fishing village of Santa Maria al Bagno.

The gargoyle of the Rector’s Church of St. John the Baptist and Mary Immaculate Conception, built between 1635 and 1653. overlooks the balcony of Casa Stefano from across the street.

Casa Stefano

A future vacation home

The home occupies the upstairs floor of the building. It is at least 100 years old, but I have no idea when it was built. It is currently habitable, but will be restored and remodeled over the next few years. Although small at 65m², it feels much larger with a grand entrance staircase, classic “volte a stella” star-vaulted ceilings throughout its three rooms, and a large panoramic rooftop terrace.
